SWOT + PESTLE Analysis Canvas
Map your organisation's internal strengths and the external forces shaping your work — on one strategic canvas.
SWOT and PESTLE answer two different questions, and the best strategies use them together. SWOT looks inward and at your immediate environment: it surfaces the Strengths and Weaknesses you control as an organisation, plus the Opportunities and Threats sitting just outside your gates. PESTLE zooms out to the wider operating context — the Political, Economic, Social, Technological, Legal and Environmental forces that you do not control but absolutely must plan around, especially in fragile and conflict-affected settings.
Work PESTLE first to read the landscape, then let those external factors sharpen your SWOT — a new donor restriction (Political) becomes a concrete Threat; a growing mobile-money network (Technological) becomes a real Opportunity. Be specific and evidence-based rather than aspirational, involve people across programmes, finance and field teams, and revisit the canvas each planning cycle. Use the Strengths-vs-Opportunities cells to decide where to invest, and the Weaknesses-vs-Threats cells to decide what to mitigate or de-risk.
