KoboToolbox Data-Collection Readiness Checklist

Run a full readiness check before your enumerators go to the field with KoboToolbox — catch the form bugs, consent gaps, offline-sync failures, and data-protection risks that ruin a survey round.

About 14 min · no sign-up

Mobile data collection with KoboToolbox or ODK can save a Myanmar field team weeks of work — but only if the form, the devices, and the people are all ready before the first interview. A skip-logic bug, a question that means something different in Burmese than in Sgaw Karen, a tablet that will not sync from a township with no signal, or a consent step that was never really explained can quietly corrupt an entire survey round. By the time you notice in the data, the respondents are gone and the budget is spent.

This checklist walks your team through everything to confirm before you deploy: questionnaire and XLSForm design and testing, translation and piloting, enumerator training, devices and offline setup, informed consent and data protection, sampling, deployment, and data-quality and backup routines. Work through each group with the person who owns that area, tick only what is genuinely done and tested, and treat the items marked critical as non-negotiable gates — they protect the people you survey and the integrity of your evidence. Use it as a go/no-go sign-off before any enumerator leaves for the field.

You are not ready to collect data yet. Go back to the questionnaire logic, translation, consent and data-protection plan, and a proper pilot before treating this as a go/no-go gate. Deploying now would put both your data and your respondents at risk.
